Evaluative Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Since creating my school magazine, I feel have come on leaps and bounds within the terms of my personal knowledge of technology, in specific, Photoshop. I have learnt an extraordinary amount since the beginning of the course and have further extended my knowledge of how to use photoshop successfully. For example i know how to make certain elements of my magazine stand out more by using drop shadows and outer glows. Additionally, I was able to use the Lasso tool to cut out a figure of a person without the background and put it in my music magazine contents page, giving it a 3D edge and helping it to become more dynamic. I have learnt how to manage and control layers in photoshop more effectively, as well as improving my visual appeal with discovering new and more intriguing fonts and styles of writing.

My knowledge of the software has developed massively from having an understanding of the basics, to having an in-depth knowledge of how to use it effectively, resulting in producing a proffesional looking magazine using it.

Evaluative Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Here area few of the things a learnt whilst using photoshop. I used these particular ones on multiple occasions and found them very useful. Knowing how to use Photoshop is vital in the production of my magazine because it enhances my abilty to create a higher quality product with the correct and desired effects to make it stand out!

Evaluative Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

This is a comparison of my front cover and how the key features attract and address my audience. I have labelled the techniques used by my magazine and in comparison to another music magazine.

Contents Page

This is my contents page and I am going to demonstrate how I intend to attract/address my audience. First, I have my logo at the very top, which is key to it becoming recognized by browsers in a shop. I tried to differentiate the fonts between having the distinctive 'MB' sign with 'This week' in italics. It immediately becomes more bold to the reader with the differentiation between fonts. The bottom right hand corner holds an advertisement which i have developed as an idea from another magazine. The idea of it is to gain a customer loyalty base in which i can build and expand on, and use for future sales promotions. This directly addresses the audience as individuals, and makes them feel more connected to the brand.

I have adopted the layout for the contents from another magazine which i have developed using differing font styles, sizes, colours etc, to gain the desired effect. My magazine also addresses the audience with the quote "Could YOU be the one", for one of the featured pages which is helping the audience build a bond almost with the magazine, and make you almost think that you could be in with a chance! It also brings the celebrities and artists closer together with the readers.

Double Page spread

My double page spread includes a layout featured in many magazines. The main image overlapping the other page slightly to join it all together. The first thing the reader will look at is the image, and as all the boys from DMA are looking at the camera, the reader automatically feels closer to them. The next thing the reader will look at is the large text or heading above the picture. This summarises what the article will be about, and attracts the reader to read the article and find out what they are talking about. However first, the eyes will wander towards the quote which entices the reader to definitely make sure they read the article! This quote gives just enough information so you know what it is about, but not enough for you to be satisfied. I have tried to major on this as much as possible and gained inspiration and ideas from other magazines such as NME and MOJO for this particular part of my magazine.

My target audience would be teenagers of all ages. Anyone who interested in a diverse range of popular chart music as well as some rock greats in the modern industry. This could be more aimed at men, however this article for my double page spread would be particularly aimed at younger girls who are the predominant fan base of DMA.

My Kerrang Analysis - As part of my magazine research

Kerrang is an internationally recognized music magazine, and plays a very influential role within the world of modern music. The magazine is very bold and stands out a lot more than other stereotypical music magazines. The first aspect of analysing the magazine cover is Language. The differing style and types of font used vary to the purpose of the font. This link directly instigates the size, colour, style etc. They range from large, bold back fonts for the title and sub headings, to large red fonts with the purpose being to stand out. The size matters greatly with the contrasting between sizes and fonts to separate what is inside the magazine. There are 4 different colours of font used, white, black, red and orange. White and black are the main colours which resembles the rock theme of the magazine. The photos include many famous rock legends with the topic of the ’50 sexiest people in rock’. They all look quite gothic, with dark hair and the men wearing eye liner. The gender is very mixed, with it evenly split men and women. This would define that it is a magazine with a target audience of both men and women.

The page elements are laid out to a more segmented front cover. The title is at the top, typically as any magazine would have. Also there is a large section of font in centre of the magazine, enabling it to stand out even more. The pictures laid around the outside help to advertise this text, as they are directly related to it. It is immediately recognisable that this is the main feature of that particular issue of
Kerrang. The white space is used specifically to attract attention to the contrasting font, in this case, the title. This contrasting effect would benefit the magazine in helping browsers to spot the magazine and helping to generally stand out. The overall result of the colours used on the front cover, is that it is definitely a more gothic, ‘Emo’ magazine. The colours are very bland, with the contrasting black and whites against each other, as well as the slightly brighter colours which help sell the magazine in terms of what is inside. The whole idea of colour being used to draw attention to the magazine would be the main purpose for how colour is used. My eye is instantly drawn to the bright font in the centre ‘50’. The distinction between the darker fonts and colours used to match the genre of the magazine, enable the central text to stand out much more than anything else, especially the ‘50’. I would then be drawn to the images surrounding the text, as they are related to it which you can guess purely from the positioning of the images. The eye is naturally drawn to the images, so therefore having lots of images on the front cover is not only informative, but very good at advertising the magazine to browsers. The text tries to relate to the reader by getting them directly involved, ’50 sexiest people in rock! As chosen by you’. This would immediately draw the attention of someone and therefore draw attention to the images around it as candidates. The images and text help each other out in a way by almost advertising each other. The general rock image, within stereotypical colours, images, fonts and style compliment that magazine for its purpose and genre.

The title of the magazine is very bold, and suits its purpose very effectively. In a strange essence, the title manages to portray the ‘loud’ image that the magazine intends to give. The ‘cracking’ effect that it uses with the title and the slightly disfigured letters, could symbolise the genre of the magazine of rock, and a loud lifestyle. This would be supported by the quotation below in a different font, size and colour, ‘Life is loud’. In terms of connotations, the blank font could be linked directly as the stereotypical colour associated with rock. Also the splitting effect of the title could be related to the idea of ‘loud’ which the magazine tries to represent to the reader. In most of the photos of ‘Rock stars’, they mostly have very extravagant hairstyles and serious facial expressions.
Furthermore, they wear make up in attempt to try and make them look more menacing and extravagant to the reader. This relationship between what the photos denote, as well as the overall genre of the magazine are very closely related. Most, if not all the people in the images look typically as if they have a bad attitude and a little bit ‘badass’. The costumes, hairstyles, facial expressions and make up, can all be directly linked towards the connotations of what the reader thinks about what their behaviour and attitude would be. In terms of the text and what can be interpreted from it within who owns it and the style and background of them. Kerrang initially begun as a one-time supplement in the Sounds newspaper, which focuses on the genre New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the rise of other hard rock acts. AC/DC appeared on Kerrang’s first cover. The Original owner was United Newspapers who then sold it to EMAP in 1991. In 2008, EMAP sold its consumer magazine to current owner Bauer Media Group. Within the ideology of this magazine, the general target audience would be teens and the younger generation. The style of this target audience would partially be ‘Emo’s’, gothic, and just those who are more in tune with rock music and the specific genres. In contrast, a differing style of magazine would be ‘MOJO’ which has a much wider variety of genres of music. Other similar magazines to Kerrang, is Rock3 and Rock Sound, as they both deal with the same genre of music, and have the same target audiences.
The magazine denotes the immediate target audience of the magazine with the statement in the center of the front cover, ’50 sexiest people in rock’. This would immediately link the target audience to those who liked Rock music as a genre, and the overall fashion, style and celebrity news within the rock world. The magazine cover seems to denote a relaxed attitude towards life, as in that in relation to the images, the people in them do not care what they look like or what people think. It could almost be considered their way of life. The target audience would be more in tune as to who is on the front cover; however some rock legends such as Ozzy Osbourne could be included to sell the magazine better, as he is such an iconic figure. Within the representation of the magazine, the front cover seems to portray men and women as equal, and that neither has dominance over the other. Furthermore this could be directly linked to the Language, and how the men are wearing make up which stereotypically, is something that women do. However, both genders appear to be wearing similar clothes, have similar styles in terms of colour, and both are wearing make up. The general essence that this magazine gives off is that there is equality in most aspects of their lives within, sexuality, sexual orientation and attraction, race and social status.
In conclusion, the magazine Kerrang uses a variety of differing techniques in attracting the target audience, and readers towards buying the magazine. The various aspects including the font, size, images, colour and title can be the difference between a magazine being popular and successful, and being a failure. The ideas and representation that the images portray to the reader about life, and where the rock world sits in comparison with normal life, are crucial to the magazine selling.

Photos taken thatt represent a mood

This would be included in my research for my magazine. Certain effects upon the mood of the reader can be determined by the features upon the magazine, no matter how simple. Above, I have tried to demonstrate how something as simple as the colour can represent a difference within the mood of the reader. I came to the conclusion that having a black and white image as the front cover portrays a feeling of darkness and would be suitable for a rock magazine. Colour is the key to any magazine selling, as well as a simple design. However, i chose for my front cover to have a black and white central image, with bright contrasting colours based around it. I thought that it may be something different and diverse to your usual popular chart music genre music magazine.

Final Double Page Spread

I have made all the necessary changes that I was going to make after the first draft. I changed the text so it reads better, increased the size of key words, as well as trying to generally make it as realistic as possible. I have also changed the position of the quote that was above before but now sits in the bottom right hand corner, which looks more professional. I also added a large 'DMA' sign in red bold arial font, to highlight what the article is about and help it become more eye catching.
In comparison with other Magazines and double page spreads, i have tried to be original, yet gain inspiration and ideas from other magazines.

This is an example of one of the double page spread examples I used.
I used this double page spread as inspiration for my choice of design as it has a stereotypical, yet unique feel to it. It is a classic example. The main image overflows partly over both pages with writing, around, or on it. The main words are highlighted and the font made bigger to enable them to jump out from the page. The example above uses this sort of theme with the text highlighted within an intriguing template. Furthermore, there is a small bit of text to the bottom right of the image explain what the image is about, which is a common feature of text based media (Newspapers, magazines etc). The image is also very revealing into his character and what he has been through. It is a typical rock legend style, with the dark fading light in the dingy woods behind the old looking isolated house. It symbolises how hard his life has been the last few years, isolated and alone.

I tried to input this into my magazine. The image on my double page spread shows the band looking very happy and laughing, which represents how they are feeling in reality. The article in my magazine clearly shows how light hearted their lives are and how they are loving every minute of it, which can be seen and shown through my image used.

Double Page Spread First Draft

This is the first draft of my double page spread. I have used multiple other magazine double page spreads for inspiration, such as Q, and Kerrang! I have the main large text in white font "How life changed", to almost set the scene for what it will be about. Also I have included for single shot pictures below of each of the band members for effect, however i am not so keen on the idea and i shall remove them and replace them with the quote above, "We have to make this work, there is no room for slip ups". The text also needs changing slughtly in terms of size. i plan to make the words highlighted red like 'DMA' bigger to stand out more, and making the top bold introduction slightly smaller.

FINAL front cover for my music magazine - slightly edited.

Evaluative Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

This is Shellie and Rhinnaon. Both are 16 years old and enjoy pop, chart music. They are very socialable and go out reguarly. They are particular fans of the boy band JLS and love their music. They have downloaded every single song that JLS have released and often attend concerts in which they are performing. They are also very keen on The Wanted and love their style of music. Both of these girls are very fashionable, alike the boy bands and would like to have boyfriends who dress similarly to those members of their favourite boy bands! They are very into other forms of media such as films, and go the cienma a lot together to check out the latest movies. Furthermore, they go out and buy movies to watch together, whenever they are not singing along together to their favourite boy bands.
My target audience for my magazine would be girls like these, who enjoy popular chart music and are into the style of a boy band similar to JLS or The Wanted. My magazine targets these types of target audience, girls and boys aged from early to late teens.

Now meet Jordan. He, alike Shellie and Rhiannon, is very much into popular chart music, and reguarly throws parties featuring music from modern boy bands and other chart music that people like to dance to. He is very much in tune with new music, and likes to be completely up to date as well as catching up on the latest gossip within the music industry. He loves films, and his favourite TV shows are Friends, Scrubs, Hollyoaks, Mock The Week, and Outnumbered. Jordan is also very appreciative of a good singing voice and has a wide range of genres of music that he likes to listen to depending on his mood, although his favourite is most definately chart music.
Jordan would be my ideal target audience. He is 15 and likes to keep up to date with all the latest music, news, gossip, and upcoming events within music! These are all the things my magazine offers, as well as plenty more. The boy band on the font cover of my magazine and on my double page spread, would be ideal for Jordans favourite type of music. Jordan needs to fulfill his lust for the latest songs and future releases can be fed to him every two weeks through my magazine as well as competitions and chances to win tickets to live shows featuring his favourite artists! Jordan needs MB magazine!

Evaluative Question 3

This is my music magazine logo. It is bold, contrasting and fits with the purpose of the magazine. My inspiration for the logo came from Q music magazine. The red background and simple font really stood out and i wanted to try and achieve that effect in my own way. Furthermore, i was trying to find something that fit in with the genre of popular chart music and i thought this to be the most suited option. The MB logo, i hope would be unique and make the magazine known as MB magazine. Here is the logo for Q magazine for which i got the inspiration for mine:

As you can see, the design is fairly similar. I opted for a easier, simpler layout and idea, as that seems to be the most popular with Q magazine being my idol, and being so popular within the industry of music.

I believe my magazine to be able to be distributed nationwide, in all sorts of shops and distributors. Businesses renound for their magazine content such as WHSMITH would be ideal, and i believe it would appeal to the right target audience. Furthermore, local newsagents who are keen distributors of magazine of all genres, music sports etc, would find my magazine very suitable for their shelves. It appeals to those who are in touch with modern, chart music, so therefore I think that it can sell in just about any magazine distributor in the country!

Evaluative Question 2

My research was on modern boy bands. My front cover featured a slightly different approach to the normal style of a band like this. I did it in black and white, which would typically represent the style of a rock band. However, I felt that if I contrasted the colours well enough, it could stand out even more and jump out to a browser as something they were not expecting. I researched popular modern boy bands and noted their style, props, costumes, setting, facial expressions etc on photo shoots and gained inspiration from more than one band to broaden my variety. Other bands i used were JLS who are again, a popular modern boy band:

I also have a video link that demonstrates the kind of music the band in my front cover would be producing as well as other elements, such as features of their style and the way they dress, which as i mentioned earlier, would be considered 'Preppy':

Evaluative Question 1

This is my first evaluative question. It evaluates my themes and layouts of my contents page. The front cover and double page spread follow a similar layout and I have demonstrated and shown where my inspiration and ideas came from, through neatly displaying and explaining with evidence, my choices for my music magazine.
This is my final piece for my contents page. I have edited certain parts of my first draft of the layout, and improved them. Furthermore, I have added more image to enhance how the readers takes in the information and to enable the magazine to stand out even more! In comparison to my first draft, it lacked the boldness and style needed for a contents. However, now I feel that i have achieved the desired effect.. As well as including some interviews and gossip from some star performers!!

This is my music magazine contents page so far. I have done all the basic layout features and main features. I have also added an advertisement in the bottom right hand corner, as this is what a lot of magazine contents features. The title, logo etc are at the top of the page and stand out. I have vaired the font styles (Bold, Italic) and sizes.

Tuesday, 12 April 2011

This is my first draft of my magazine front cover. I have tried sticking to the '3 colours rule' which basically is where you only hav e 3 colours in your front page. This enables it to look more in contrast with everything and to flow better. This trick also aids the magazine in standing out, with bold, contrasting fonts. I have included a barcode, however i am yet to insert the date and issue number. What is common on many magazine covers is a quote from the person/people/band etc, in the main image. Therefore, my final front cover shall include a quote from the band (DMA) in bold white writing next to the title.
